Statement to the public by the Syrian Army following the resignation of President Shishakli - 26 February 1954

Honourable People, His Excellency, President Adib Shishakli, has written to the Speaker of the House of Representative, informing the House of his resignation by saying the following:

 

“Dear Syrians In order to avert the bloodshed among my fellow Syrians, the Army that I would sacrifice my life for, and the Arab World that I wanted to serve with impartiality and dedication, I hereby submit my resignation as President of the Syrian Arab Republic, to my dear Syrians who elected me and put their valued trust in me. I hope that this decision will serve the best interests of my country; I pray to God to protect it from all evil, guide it towards unity, strength it, and grant it ultimate glory and splendor.”

 

The Syrian People have now been informed of President Shishakli’s resignation. This will have its impact on the nation, in different ways. Dear citizens, the Syrian Army asks you to keep calm and refrain from taking to the streets in any manner. We hope that you will respect this request. Please be reassured that the Army remains united for the sake of maintaining its duty to protect you and the country. It will continue to preserve security and order, which are vital for our independence
